Blast to the Past: Staff reflect on their high school athletics
Mr. Hansen was a proud member of the tennis and soccer teams when he attended Greenville high school. Some of his favorite high school memories were playing soccer with his team, it was a lot of fun even though it was a lot of running. He said that tennis was easier for him even though there was still some running but it wasn’t as intense. Mr. Hansen is still in contact with some of his teammates but not all of them.
Ms. Szyamanski went to highschool in the town of Coleman, Michigan, where she attended the Coleman High School. While she was there she participated in many things, including varsity volleyball and competitive cheerleading. Even though she says that her team wasn’t the best, they were still decent and had lots of fun. Her favorite memories are when she would ride home with her team on the bus after having fun at cheer competitions since cheer was her favorite sport. Ms. Szyamanski still is in contact with some of her teammates and even her coach!
In highschool Mrs. Sepanski played basketball at Sacred heart. When we asked her how successful her team was she said “We were not very good”, but she stated she was a good shooter. Her favorite memory was spending time with her team during practice and on the bus ride to games. An Interesting fact is that
Mr. Schell was her teacher while she attended Sacred Heart.
Mr. Schell played football, basketball, and baseball at Mount Pleasant high school which he is currently teaching at, as most students know. One of his favorite memories is going to state his senior year for baseball. Schell got recruited for college basketball at CMU because of his amazing skill. Basketball was his favorite sport, so he was very happy to be able to play in college.
Mr. Spence did wrestling, football, and track at Cheboygan high school. He said his wrestling team was not very successful because he only had six athletes on his team, but they still enjoyed it and had lots of fun. His favorite memory of playing sports was from track, they had a teammate named Zach who would randomly pretend to bite other kids on the bus so they would freak out.
Mrs. Bartell, a hall monitor here at Mt. Pleasant high school went to Rochester for her high school years. While she was there she was a member of both the Varsity tennis and soccer teams. Her team was seventh in the state for tennis, so they were pretty good and had lots of fun. But she still enjoyed soccer more. Now she is the JV girls tennis coach here as of the 2023 season, and soon might become the varsity coach.
Mr. Lazarov, a guidance counselor here at MPHS, was quite the athlete in high school. He went to Shepard where he played varsity basketball, football, and track. Basketball was his favorite because he always had so much fun with his team at practice, they never won any district or state championships but they were still a pretty good team. Mr. Lazarov claims that he will one V one anyone in the school, including Mr. Schell, and win. He was also on the football team which had some very successful seasons, they went 8-1 and 9-0 in two years. What he was most successful in though was track, his team went to states after an amazing 1st place regional win that surprised everyone, Mr. Lazarov really helped the team with his placing in the 800m race.
Mrs. Dawson did cheer and track at Ayersville high school in Defiance, Ohio. She said that her cheer team was average but they still had fun. She preferred cheer over running because running made her very anxious and it would affect her races. Her favorite memory was going to camp for cheer where she made lots of good memories and friends. She is even in contact with one of her old teammates that went to camp with her
