The Mount Pleasant School Store which is mainly run by students offers a wide variety of snacks and apparel for MPHS students. Students in Ms. Claugbaugh’s marketing classes, Ms. Dunn’s culinary arts students, and staff all contribute to the school store; making sure it runs smoothly and efficiently. The school store is essential to MPHS because it offers students a way to get involved and offers more snacks that aren’t typically offered in the cafeteria.
Culinary arts; ran by Ms. Dunn, allows students to cook and learn about baking and cooking. Ms. Dunn says, “If you take two years with me, you should be ready to go into industry.” Most culinary students aim to do just that: go into industry. The school store allows these students to make food that can be bought by other students during lunch or passing time.
Most culinary art students take this class to attain culinary skills. Audri Howell, a student from Sacred Heart Academy says she joined culinary arts because “I love cooking so much and I like to do hands-on stuff.” like others, Howell said that she was interested in culinary arts because of the idea of running a restaurant.
The MPHS school store also helps the marketing class students with real-life experiences running a store or business. Destinee Priess says “It teaches us responsibility, how to do inventory, how to run the registers, and it gets us ready to go into marketing in the real world.” Marketing students help in the school store by advertising products, choosing prices, and even helping set up the store at the beginning of the day with Mrs. Russell. Because the students are participating in a real, running business, it gives them a taste of a business experience.
Mrs. Russell, the marketing paraprofessional at MPHS, helps students set up the store in the morning and run the store during lunches and passing times. She believes in the importance of students needing to eat during the school day and having easy access to snacks or school apparel. She says “It’s nice for the tech center students to have a nearby place to get snacks, meet up with friends, find apparel, or other things that you might not find in other places.”
Overall, the school store is a great place for students to get a snack, get a taste of business, for culinary students to sell their work, and for kids to meet up with their friends. For these reasons, the school store is very important to our MPHS community.
