Spirit week is a good lead up to homecoming and a fun way to show school spirit. Yesterday’s theme was beach day. People went all out sporting leis, floral shirts, sunglasses, and sandals. A call back to the August 29th game against Heritage, the first varsity football game of the season. Though not as many people dressed up for this event as I would have hoped, it was still successful having people hyped for the up and coming homecoming dance and friday game which is the main purpose of this entire week. Those that did dress up had a fun flashback to not only the first football game of the season but a flashback to most students favorite time of year. Summer.
Many first year students might be apprehensive about participating in these events unsure what to wear or how to get involved. Upperclassmen are great to look up to to understand the traditions that have been going on for years. On top of that sometimes it’s fun to let loose and look goofy, spirit week is the one week a year that you can look as ridiculous as you want and no one will say a thing. So feel free to go as crazy or as tame as you want because if you feel as if you went too far someone has probably gone farther. For example, senior Brock Binder, student section leader, wore a coconut bra and a grass skirt as his ‘costume’ while others wore simpler outfits such as Hawaiian shirts or simply summer wear. Either way it’s a fun tradition that many people encourage others to participate in to show their oiler pride.
