MPHS has many Homecoming traditions, one of these being float building where classes come together to build a float that goes along with the themes given to each grade for the Homecoming parade. Anyone from MPHS can participate in float building for their class, sports, or any other clubs they’re in. Float building is a wonderful opportunity for students to get to know each other and work together to benefit their class.
Class float building takes place a few weeks before homecoming. This year the students met at
the bus garage behind the Mt. Pleasant Middle School. They usually gather 1 to 2 times before the homecoming parade that takes place the day before the Homecoming dance. Students and staff bring supplies such as paper, cardboard, paint, and other tools to create their floats.
This year for the themes, the floats are going to be based on our overall homecoming theme, Disney. The freshman class has Cars, sophomores have The Lion King, juniors have Moana, and seniors have Monsters Inc. Each class has to work together to represent their theme with their float along with the class that they’re in. For example, the Seniors have a quote on their float that says “The Senior Scream Team” to represent Monsters Inc. and the senior class.
Floats aren’t only for classes, they’re also for sports and clu
bs. Different sports teams like cross country, swim, and volleyball participate in the parade with their floats built by the team. These floats are a good way to show off their sport and use them as a team-building activity. The team captains/coaches set up times and dates for their float building at any location they choose. Usually, the team works together to bring supplies for their floats.
Float building is an amazing experience for students to get to know the other people in their class since everyone is invited! Because float building is optional for students to participate in, Emma Campbell, a MPHS sophomore says, “Most people who come actually wan to do it so it makes it more enjoyable.” Other students also enjoy ho
w all the students get to work together and bond with their community.
Although homecoming has many fun, memorable traditions, float building has many opportunities for students to get involved, show their school spirit, and connect with peers, making it one of the biggest homecoming traditions at MPHS.
