At MPHS, we have a marching band consisting of 8th-12th graders, but if you dig deeper inside the marching band, we have a colorguard. Our colorguard at MPHS has 8th-12th graders, Reesa Scully, Harper Wassman, Amelia Russell, Mallow Prussner, Bea Chapman, Hope Russell, Laken Gutzman, and Naomi Vaillancourt. We have two amazing coaches, Lydia Price and Jaiden Cregger.
During the summer, we have band camp at MPHS Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. In the fall, we meet to rehearse our show on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, on Fridays to practice and perform at football games, and on Saturdays to go to competitions all around Michigan. Every odd year, we go to Bands of America for three days to perform at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The MPHS Colorguard is a fun school activity if you like to dance or perform. We dance, perform with the band, and learn how to spin and toss our flags. Laken Gutzman, an MPHS senior says, “My favorite part about being in colorguard is the friends I made and performing!”. You can make many amazing connections with people in the guard or the band and have so many fun experiences performing and making connections.
One of our coaches, Lydia Price, says, “People should join the guard because of the connections and friends you make. So many of my best friends I have, I met through the guard and marching band. I think the art itself is super cool and impressive, too!” Jaiden Cregger, another coach for the MPHS Colorguard says “My favorite part about coaching guard is creating spaces for people to develop friendships and connections together!” Colorguard can offer many fun experiences. Our MPHS colorguard is tight-knit and like a family. Harper Wassman, an MPHS freshman, says, “We are literally a big family.”
