Women’s history month has been celebrated nationally since 1981. Women’s history month started off as a week. Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 requesting the president to deem the week starting March 7th women’s history week. As time has gone on the national celebration has grown from one week to a month. https://womenshistorymonth.gov
Every year since 1995 the president has issued an annual proclamation proclaiming March womens history month. Women’s history month celebrates the contributions and achievements women have made throughout history. This includes celebrating what women have overcome. Women throughout history have fought for women’s rights so that the generations of women after them could be independent and free.
Within our school district and schools we also have many women in leadership positions. Our superintendent is Jennifer Verleger and both of our assistant principals Lisa Davis and Kristin Willey are all women. This is far from the norm and can help with the notion of men ruling the world. Women are more visible than men in almost every area of education; however, they are underrepresented in top-tier leadership positions, says the department of education.
Lisa Davis is one fantastic leader who is paving the way for others. Mrs. Davis makes it her goal to not only help and influence each student, but to also influence young girls at our school. “I have had students over the years tell me that I was such a strong woman and they wanted to have the character that I had. In this role, I am trying to do the same things with all students that I talk to each day. I do want the girls to see that they can be influential and strong leaders also.” Having a role model like this can be extremely beneficial to young women within our school.

Mrs. Davis is also such a hard working and dedicated leader in our school. Despite not landing the leadership position within the district the first two times she kept applying and kept trying, she never applied to another district and never quit. She worked harder and stayed at Mount Pleasant Public Schools with passion and love for the district and the environment. “I never applied to another district because I have such a passion for Mt. Pleasant Public Schools. My 4 children all graduated or attend this district. I started here as a teacher in 1998 and hope to retire from this district.” states Mrs. Davis. Having her own kids in the district can also help her to make sure she is addressing the things that need to be fixed within the school. She has extra input from a student’s view helping her do her job more thoroughly.
This energy and passion she put into landing the job, she also puts in every day she has the job. Mrs. Davis puts in so much time and effort into everything she does every day. She is an amazing leader and an even better person. Mrs. Davis is filled with passion and love for our district and all of the students within Mount Pleasant High School.
