It’s a great day to be a cardinal! Learn more about Finley Helm’s story on how she committed to Saginaw Valley State University. Finley has been on Varsity since she was a freshman and has continued to grow since. She is a phenomenal outside hitter and co-captain. Finley stands at 5’9″ and has an outstanding vertical of 9’6″. Finley is an aggressive, strong, and loud player on the court. Last year, Finley climbed to the top 50 athletes in Michigan only as a junior! During her high school career, she’s achieved over 700 kills! Go, Finley! She’s also gotten 141 blocks! An athlete this fierce just can’t be contained to a single season, Finley also plays club volleyball with the 17u Black team in Clio, Michigan.
“I have always wanted to play collegiate sports, it was just a matter of which one.”- Finley Helm. It is clear how much she wants to exhibit her admirable skills to the rest of the community. Finley is very focused on her sport and continues to display it proudly in and out of the gym. Finley also dominates on the field as a varsity softball player. She is an incredible athlete who excels in all of her sports and athletic desires.
You may wonder how someone becomes so fierce and determined for her sport.“What motivates me most is just my love for the game.” -Finley Helm. She explains how she became such a motivated and inspiring athlete who pursues to work harder every day to improve and climb to such a high level.
How does someone devote their whole life to something they love, and build such a talent and skill for their passion? How does someone stay so tenacious and driven to compete at the collegiate level? “Don’t focus all your energy on the negatives, like making mistakes or not seeing results immediately. Everything takes time, you have to be confident in everything.”-Finley Helm.
Finley is an awesome role model for younger or less experienced players who are still so very passionate about playing at a high level. She continues to help, teach, and share her skills with everyone. She is truly a great player and constantly shows it. Even when you are at the very top, you still have so many goals, dreams, and records to break. “My goal is to win the conference championships and enjoy this season as much as I can!”-Finley Helm.
Finley shares how important it is that she finishes her last high school season with a bang, what a way to show it by winning the conference championships! Athletes are always pushing themself to be better, faster, and stronger. The only way to push yourself harder is to surround yourself with people with the same mindset and objective as you. Finley states that her favorite thing about her team and coaches is how much support and time they put into her to succeed as a player. It’s the greatest thing when you have such a powerful and devoted team and coaches who continue to push you to the farthest limits.
With great power comes great responsibility. When you have such an ambitious and competitive player, offers fly left and right. What was so special about SVSU that gave them the chance to snag Finley Helm on their volleyball team? “As soon as I stepped onto the campus I fell in love and knew I could see myself here for 4 years. When I met the coaches we had a great connection.”-Finley Helm. SVSU is a phenomenal school that has a 96% graduation rate, with over 170 student clubs and organizations, as well as the #1 ranked dorms out of Michigan campuses- no wonder Finley fell in love!
